Public Phone Charging Stations
Public phone charging stations can pose a potential risk to your device and personal data. This is due to a threat known as “juice jacking.” Here is what you need to know:
1. Malware Installation: Hackers use public USB ports to put malware and spyware onto devices. Hackers do this by installing rogue hardware on the USB port, like skimmers on gas pumps. This malware can lock your device. It can also export personal data and passwords to the criminal.
2. Data Theft: The hackers can use the exported sensitive information to access your online accounts. They can also sell it to other hackers.
3. Infected Cables: Criminals will leave infected cables plugged in at charging stations. They look much like legitimate cables, but they are not!
It is important to note that the threat exists. There is little evidence that it has ever posed a threat to the public. To stay safe, carry your own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet instead.
